Ballpoint pen is characterized as a pen that has a disposable refill unit consisting of a metal or plastic tube containing a thick, greasy, slow-drying ink, with a tiny textured ball at the writing end.

Ink is picked up by the ball and transferred to the paper during writing. Some of the earliest ballpoints had fixed balls that were not part of the refill.
